Livio & Roby (Premiesku) Halcyon Q & A & Podcast for Cocoon Heroes, New York

PREMIESKU

Romanian duo Livio & Roby, together with their pal George G, sometimes like to play with words, make anagrams or combine formulas. As a result of this game, they derived a name „Premiesku“ for their mutual project, suggesting „premiere“ which resonates as a Romanian name. That is what their collaboration is about - a unique new experience, which is already gaining accolades from many party heads, acclaimed music professionals and opinion leaders.

The name reflects the music: crossing of
their diverse vibrant inspirations and moods breeds a new concept of genuine, recognizable sound. As a virtuoso audio engineers, they intelligently structure their (sometimes) heterogeneous ideas into powerful and dynamic compositions that catches the heart, the body and the mind of a listener. Compact „four to the floor“ patterns, inspired with classic deep house, Detroit techno and tech house are switched up and deconstructed, resulting in a hypnotic brew. Driving and energetic solid grooves are fused with a plethora of colors and sonic twists, ranging from Balkan cultural heritage to surreal theatre. Their outstanding production has been released on influential labels such as Cecille, All In, Desolat.

During everyday studio sessions of experimenting and fitting the pieces of their imaginary worlds together, computers with straightforward and intuitive softwares are a necessary tool. But digital environment is not enough for expressing all those subtle feelings and stories they want to tell. Essential tools for this transmission are music instruments; they are vital for articulation of emotions, and sharing it with the audience. That is why Livio, Roby and George decided to leave the virtual world aside and create a real, analog environment for their live performances.

They did what no one did before - designed three special consoles consisted of parts of various machines. These hardware racks are tailor-made based on their draft, put together by an old fellow in a workshop in the heart of Romania. A inimitable gadget for each one of them is their vision of playing electronic music without computer. With this innovative setup, they have entered the era of their analog sound! The concept is launched at Time Warp Lab in Mannheim on March 31 2012. Guys presented their machines at the workshop „Premiesku analog sound“ organized by Desolat, explaining the new way of playing using the examples from their debut album “Constant” which will be released on Desolat in September. Also, their fresh ideas are presented through their latest release – “indirect” EP released on Desolat in May.

Soundwall.it interview:

Romanian duo Livio and Roby, along with their pal George G. gave birth to the project Premiesku few years ago in Romania, published togheter in 2009 by Cécille and Desolat in 2012. September 2012 seems to be a precious month for them. After the liveset in New York and Ibiza, Premiesku will land in London on 22th September to launch their first album “Indirect” for the label Desolat, while in Italy will be in Milan for the Time Warp party on 29th September. The EP released in May (Constant, Desolat) has already given us reason to believe that Premiesku is more than just a techno house project. Their approach to music has finally found the thickness they were looking through. The construction of three analog consoles with which they play them live. It can’t be enought just a computer and a software to express the music. Their intent is to demonstrate the importance of sound through a live played with his worthy instruments, before the software is replacing them on large scale. This choice is definitely a choice of the heart. So, we are looking forward to see them, or mainly to hear them.

Premiesku came about the partnership between Livio, Roby and George G. How it all started and what place each of you have in the Premiesku project?

All started in in 2001 when we all meet eachother. In 2004, Livio & Roby project came to life. We reach the conclusion that we have the same love for electronic music, the road to Premiesku was just a the natural step.
Everybody is doing stuff for the project, we are all sharing ideas and these ideas are filtered by the other two and this is amazing (smile).

How was your musical growth working for several labels like Cecille, All Inn, Desolat.? In what you have changed compared to when it all started?

Of course having such releases, helped us to gain more feedback and to resonate in this industry.

What are your biggest musical influences and how do you relate to your country of origin, Romania? Do you follow the electronic scene in your country?

Of course everyone of us has his own influences, this is the beauty of a band, mixed influences give us more flexibility in our music. Also we have our own romanian influence and we proud of this, especially when in these days romanian techno-house sound is very popular all over the world (smile).

You did something very special in those last times – designed three special consoles consisted of parts of various machines. I’m very courious about it, can you describe us this analogic consoles?

As we said before we wanted to skip a setup which revolves around a computer and ableton live. We considered that it’s nice to present our live concept in a close manner to our studio setup and basically really close to our way of creating the music. It’s true it’s harder to install everything and needs a lot of attention during the sound check but in the end makes sense. So with the help of a very good friend, we designed 3 consoles which fits perfectly to our live act.
So the first console it’s more or less the groove console. Contains a sequencer which controls an analogic drum generator and an anagogic modular synth which creates bass, some leads and fx. Also this sequencer is in sync with an analog drum modular synth. The last thing on this this rack it’s a midi clock generator which keeps everything in sync. The second console has a complex modular synth, a second sequencer and two samplers. The third one is basically the fx console. Inside is a really cool analog filter, a multi fx machine which was used in the 90′s and two modern ones. All this devices are incorporated in cases which were specially designed for the live show and also for traveling. All the connections are easy to handle and everything is designed to fit in the dj booth.

How was the experiesce at Time Warp Lab (31.3.2012 in Mannheim DE) for the Premiesku Analog Sound performance? How did the public react and get involved?

It was a really nice experience because it was the first time when we expose our custom Premiesku consoles, people were very curious and were pleased to see how the machines work.

Why do you need to bring analogic sounds in digital era? Is this a truly return to analogic or just only an experiment?

Analog should be kept alive. We considered that it’s a necessity for this digital era, people seems to forget how everything started and actually from where it comes the real quality of the sound and of course this is how we work in the studio. It is not an experiment and for sure this will evolve in more complex live setup.

You will come in italy for the Time Warp party in Milan (29.09.2012). Can you suggest something to us about the set?

It’s very nice to have the possibility to play on such a big festival, we are excited because this is going to be big for us. Our set is a combination of techno, detroit and house. It will be our special designed live set played just from machines.

What is your next step?

On 22 of September we’ll have the album launch party in London, also excited about this one. We wish to have our own stage in the future (smile).
